Moss

bringing your pages with you

Can I bring my Day One or Apple Journal entries into Moss?

Yes. Moss can bring in a Day One export, an Apple Journal export, Markdown and plain text files. The import is read on your iPhone, nothing is uploaded, and Moss shows you what it found before it writes a single page.

Before you start

Years of writing are worth handling gently. You don’t have to leave anything behind to try Moss: an export is a copy, so your old journal stays exactly where it is while you look around.

From Day One

In Day One, open Settings › Import/Export and export your journal as a .zip. Save it to Files. Then in Moss open Settings › Bring pages in (it’s also offered the first time you open Moss) and choose that .zip.

From Apple’s Journal app

Export your entries from iPhone Settings › Apps › Journal, then choose the export in Moss under Settings › Bring pages in.

From Markdown or plain text

If you have kept a diary in notes or another app, plain text and Markdown files come in the same way. And if your old diary is on paper, Moss can scan a handwritten page with the camera; the handwriting is read on your iPhone.

What comes across

Photos, moods, places and voice notes come across with the words. If you already wrote on a day in Moss, the two are merged: your Moss words stay first and the imported entry goes underneath. Nothing is ever replaced.

Once your pages are in, they live like every other Moss page: on your iPhone and, if you want, in your own iCloud. There is no account to make and no Moss server they pass through.

And if you ever leave

Settings › Take everything with you makes a copy on your iPhone: one Markdown file per page, with your photos, videos and recordings beside it. Your pages should never be stuck anywhere, including here.

Moss is free on the App Store. No account, no login, no ads. iPhone, iPad and Mac.
