Your code

I forgot my Moss code

Your Moss code is kept on this iPhone and nowhere else, so nobody can look it up for you, not us either. The only way past it is to delete Moss and install it again. A new install forgets every code the last one kept.

  • If “Keep in step with iCloud” was on (it is unless you turned it off), your pages come back from your iCloud after you install Moss again and open it signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • If it was off, the pages on this iPhone go with the app. They come back only from an iPhone backup made before, or from a copy you made with “Take everything with you”.

Tip: in Settings › Moss code, you can let Face ID or Touch ID open Moss too, or choose “Whatever opens this iPhone” so there is nothing new to remember.

I forgot my iPhone’s passcode

If Moss is kept by “Whatever opens this iPhone”, it opens with your iPhone’s own passcode, which Moss can’t reset. Apple can help you get back into your iPhone at Apple Support.

A journal with its own code came to a new phone and won’t open

Codes never travel, not even to iCloud. On a new or restored iPhone, a journal with a code opens after your iPhone’s own passcode, and then asks you to choose a new code.

Moving and bringing pages

Moving to a new iPhone
  • With iCloud on: sign in to the same Apple Account on the new iPhone and install Moss. Your pages, photos, drawings and voice notes arrive by themselves. The status line in Settings › iCloud says when they’re up to date.
  • From an iPhone backup: setting up the new iPhone from an iCloud Backup (or Quick Start) brings Moss’s pages along with it.

Your Moss code stays on the iPhone it was made on. On the new one, open Moss the way you open the iPhone, then choose a new code.

Using Moss on iPhone and iPad together

Turn on Settings › iCloud › Keep in step with iCloud on each device, signed in to the same Apple Account. If two devices write on the same day before they hear of each other, the pages are merged; nothing is overwritten.

Bringing in Day One, Apple Journal or other pages

Open Settings › Bring pages in (it’s also offered when you first open Moss) and choose the file:

  • Day One: the .zip from Day One’s Settings › Import/Export.
  • Apple Journal: the export from iPhone Settings › Apps › Journal.
  • A copy from Moss: the folder or .zip from “Take everything with you”.
  • Plain text or Markdown files.

Everything is read on your iPhone; nothing is uploaded. Moss shows what it found before it writes anything. Photos, moods, places and voice notes come across with the words. A day you already wrote on is merged: your words stay first and the imported entry goes underneath. Nothing is ever replaced.

Making a copy of everything

Settings › Take everything with you makes a copy on your iPhone: one Markdown file per page, your photos, videos and recordings beside them, and a moss.json that brings it all back into Moss later. It goes nowhere until you choose where to save it.

Speak to write isn’t working

Speech is turned into words on your iPhone, never on a server. On iOS 26 and later your iPhone may first need to download Apple’s speech model for your language, which happens once in the background. If your language isn’t available on the device, Moss says so. Also check that Moss has Microphone and Speech Recognition allowed in iPhone Settings › Apps › Moss.

Moss Plus

Cancelling a subscription

In iPhone Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions › Moss, tap Cancel Subscription. You can also get there from Moss Plus in the app (“Manage in the App Store”). Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge; Plus stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for. A free trial cancelled before it ends isn’t charged.

Restoring a purchase

Open Moss Plus in the app and tap “Restore a purchase”, signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account you bought it with. Subscriptions and Moss, forever both come back this way.

Asking for a refund

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Privacy and leaving

Turning off the usage counts

Settings › What stays yours › See every signal, then tap “stop sending usage”. That screen lists every anonymous signal Moss can send. More in the privacy policy.

Deleting everything

Settings › What stays yours › Delete everything. Take a copy first if you want one. It removes every page in every journal, photos, videos and voice notes, Moss’s safety copies, your codes, your settings and the skies Moss wrote to Apple Health. With iCloud on, your pages also leave your iCloud and your other devices. An iPhone backup Apple already made still holds them until it’s replaced, or until you delete it in iPhone Settings › iCloud.

There is nothing to delete on our side. We never had your pages.
